Why 1885?
The name comes from the year of composition of a Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, which was discovered in a vestry cupboard of All Saints' church, Putney. The composer was Harry Dancey, organist of the church between 1876 and 1928. The 'Dancey Singers' may have raised false expectations, so '1885' was settled upon.
